Memento Mori is a Latin phrase meaning “remember that you will die.” In stoic philosophy, it serves as a meditative practice to maintain perspective and urgency in living a virtuous life.

Practice

The Stoics, including Marcus Aurelius, used memento mori as a daily reflection:

  • To avoid procrastination on meaningful work
  • To release attachment to material possessions
  • To deepen gratitude for the present moment
  • Negative Visualization — imagining loss to appreciate what you have
  • Amor Fati — loving one’s fate, including mortality
